Christchurch gets a new park for Christmas

December 2017

Rauora Park, the new public space at the heart of the East Frame, will be open for the public to enjoy from Tuesday, 19 December.

The 660-metre long park covers five blocks between Manchester and Madras Streets and has been delivered by Ōtākaro Limited on behalf of the Crown.

“There’s no better present for the Garden City than a whole new park,” says Ōtākaro Limited Chief Executive Albert Brantley.

“The Anchor Projects are all about creating places for people and with 9000m2 of grass, 14,000 plants and over 300 trees Rauora Park will certainly be an enjoyable place to take a break from the busy central city.”

Rauora Park is bookended by the Innovation Precinct and Margaret Mahy Family Playground.

“The basketball court and table tennis tables at the northern end of Raoura Park create a connection to the playground, and will ensure the area appeals to a wide range of people,” says Mr Brantley.

“With Fletcher Living’s new youth space on the corner of Manchester and Lichfield Streets open and a mini golf course also on the way, it’s worth taking a look around.”

“Ultimately Rauora Park will help develop a sense of community in the area as the new homes on either side of it become available.”

“Rauora Park has been completed ahead of schedule and I would like to thank the hundreds of people that have worked so hard on it. I know for all those involved it has been a special project to be a part of.”

An official family-friendly opening event will be held for Rauora Park on 28 January 2018.
